The Great Blog Hiatus of 2010

Hi All,

Life has proven to be too busy to keep up with a blog over the past few weeks and instead of feeling guilty about it, I'm just going to officially announce that this blog will be on hiatus until further notice...

Here are some tips/ideas to keep you going until I can return:

* Eat the Ahi Tuna appetizer at Outback, it's delicious

* If you can't afford a gift for someone, make them a dish or cookies - make them a card, but don't go without, people understand that money is tight, but you should still show that you cared enough to do SOMETHING

* Don't know if you live by a Christmas Tree Shoppe, but if you do, you should shop there

* Always search online for coupons before you go shopping... just enter the store name and add "coupon" - then click and see what comes up (example: Old Navy Coupon)

* Unplug your electronics when you're not using them, it saves $$ - I promise it does

* Learn how to make pizza dough from scratch, it's delicious and a cheap way to eat/feed guests

* If you can't afford to travel and visit friends, set aside time to have a REAL phone conversation with them, skip the text and DIAL THEM UP - reconnect

* Drink lots of water, during winter months people tend to forget that their bodies need water more than ever... heating systems tend to make you dehydrated, this can lead to headaches, dry skin and more.... drink your water.... and I strongly suggest adding a packet of Emergen-C to it every once in a while... I recommend the Tangerine flavor... yum

* Think about booking your next vacation, work and life can seem so much easier if you know when you're getting your next big break/time-out....

* I highly suggest trying the new cheddar cheese bagel twists at Dunkin' Donuts

* Buy wrapping paper and gift wrap items whenever you see them on-sale for deeply discounted costs, I can't tell you how thankful I am that I bought a few rolls of neutral colored paper after the holidays.... takes a lot of stress away when there's something you need to wrap and you have no time to shop...

I will blog again soon - but for now - enjoy the rest of Winter 2010!

Ha Ha - another day, another month and I'm still a crappy blogger!

Where oh where to begin - the holidays were a mad dash to the end of 2009, then I went on a week long vacation, and now I'm back to work with a nasty cold!

Want to hear more??? I didn't think so...

Life Tip For January - Don't go anywhere without your wisps. You'll thank me.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.....

Kono Sauvignon Blanc

Hello My Friends!

I want to let you know about this awesome Sauvignon Blanc that I've found... it's called Kono, Wine of New Zealand. If you like Sauv Blancs, and you like them from the New Zealand region - you are going to LOVE this wine!

It is so fresh, crisp and delicious - I'm willing to bet that you will write me a personal thank you note for turning you on to it! Typically in the winter, you can easily find ourself drowning in a sea of red wines... this season I'm going with white! I am especially fond of this particular brand and bottle...

I tried this wine for the first time on a whim, honestly - because the bottle is appealing... it's a slightly greenish tinted glass and the label is bright white - it just screamed "PICK ME", and secondly because the price was right! I found this bottle for just under $10. The first sip was such a nice surprise... the hint of the citrus we all know and love from our New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs was far from overwhelming, and this wine has a superb crip, light taste... I had my glass (or two) with a few ice cubes and it was a delightful, refreshing break... I couldn't wait to hit the ground running in search of this wine at my local wine shop.

I have since then, searched for this wine, found it (yay!), and discovered that it's averaging $10 a bottle... and I can barely keep up with stocking it in the apartment - everyone loves it! I highly recommend picking up a bottle or two and giving it a try - it's easy on the wallet, it's a very pretty bottle so it looks GREAT on the table and on the shelf, and if you like Sauvignon Blanc's, I honestly believe that this one will become an instant favorite of yours. It's certainly a new favorite of mine.

Cheers!

I Officially Suck At Blogging!

So I can now say - I officially suck at blogging! I went over an entire month, without posting anything new...

Partially because I've been really busy and partially because I haven't come across any great products or activities to recommend...unless you can count sitting on the couch watching a 5 hour marathon of "Say Yes To The Dress" on TLC... haha.

Lately I've been debating if I should get a Christmas tree for my apartment. I certainly have the room - but somewhere inside myself, I'm thinking - perhaps my home should be an oasis...a safe haven from the overload of Christmas & Holiday decorations... I see enough stuff everywhere and I have no sentimental attachment to a tree - and I certainly don't want to clean up after it or remember to water it and kill my hard wood floors.... don't know. I haven't fully committed either way... I guess we'll see what happens when I'm bored this weekend!

I've been drinking a touch of white wine lately - I have never been a white wine drinker before (always preferring red) but something about the light and crisp taste of white - helps the holidays not feel so heavy... I've become a fan of Pino Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc (from New Zealand regions) - the Barefoot Sauvignon Blanc is pretty tasty and definitely reasonably priced.

Happy Holidays everyone - and cheers to hoping that I remember to blog more often! ha!

Ikea

Yes, we all love nice looking furniture at a discounted price - so I went to Ikea this weekend and fetched a lovely dresser and tv/shelving table.

This blog posting is short and sweet:

When you purchase Ikea furniture - DOUBLE check that you have all the right pieces before you assemble. When I say double check, I mean don't just count and glance at the sizes - you'll want to check to make sure that the screw/bolt holes are accurate on all of the pieces. I'm not going to lie - this will take you about 15 extra minutes, but trust me, it's worth it.

Buggers sent me home with the wrong pieces for a dresser drawer (three wrong pieces, all for the same drawer) and the wrong sized doors for the tv/shelving unit (after we asked for help and had the guy double check the sizes).

It's great looking furniture, but that "discounted price" includes the amount you'll pay in gas, driving back to the store 2 or 3 times to replace/garner parts.

It's helpful to plan for this in advance so that you aren't as dissapointed when it DOES happen.

Cheers and happy assembling,
J

Pizza Stones

I am a LOVER of pizza stones - I actually cannot live without one in the house. I absolutely love making pizza at home - it's super delicious and makes for way better leftovers...

But to do this properly - you must and I mean MUST own a proper pizza stone. I have learned from experience that without the proper pizza stone - you are looking at a gooey, oily mess left over on your stone that will NEVER and I mean never, wash out.

Moving into my own apartment recently - my sister was kind enough to buy me my own pizza stone to replace the one I was leaving behind... I was so touched by this and beyond grateful because I really needed it.

The sad part is that I hate this pizza stone. I couldn't be more dissapointed for two reasons a) it sucks and b)my sister gave it to me as the nicest gesture and I would give anything to love it.

Here's why it's horrible - it's not a smooth surface... it's course like an emory (emmry, emry how do you spell this???) board. I mean, you could actually file your nails on this thing if you wanted too. And it's not sealed.

I re-heated some pizza on it last night and every drop of cheese/oil left a nasty oil stain on it. I think I built a new muscle in my arm just trying to scrub this thing and it RUINED my sponge. Because if it could file nails, it can demolish a brand new thick sponge. Proof was in the pudding.

So - the reason why I'm typing about it today is to let you all know what to look for when buying your beloved pizza stone. Unfortunately I don't have any to recommend at the moment, but BELIEVE me, I will be on the hunt and will surely update this posting as soon as a hero arrives.

OPEN THE BOX before you buy it. Make sure that it's smooth and sealed. You don't want it to be any type of "dry" material - if you can imagine a drop of water getting soaked up by it - it's going to be awful. It's worth the extra money to buy a good one, because you really don't want an oily-looking mess sitting in your cabinet. That's no appetizing.

Good luck out there in the pizza stone world and check back for an update because I'm on the lookout and will be sure to send a link!

Cheers,
J
